From Reflex and Sensory Integration to Literacy Learning

Reading and writing rely on the brain’s ability to coordinate movement, vision, hearing, and attention. Early reflexes such as Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex (ATNR) and Symmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex (STNR) lay the foundation for eye movement, hand–eye coordination, and postural control.
When these reflexes remain unintegrated, children may struggle to track lines of text, reverse letters, or tire easily when reading or writing.
At HKOMR, our speech therapists use reflex and sensory integration techniques to help the brain organize these foundational systems. Once the body feels stable and the sensory pathways are synchronized, the brain can focus on higher-level language processing. This creates the ideal foundation for reading and writing skills develop naturally.

PHONOLOGICAL PROCESSING SYSTEM
語音處理系統
Function: Breaks spoken words into phonemes and links them to letters or characters (foundation of decoding and spelling).
Difficulty: Weakness leads to trouble reading, spelling errors, and unclear sound discrimination.
HKOMR strengthens this system through phonological awareness training and reflex integration to build a solid foundation for literacy.
功能:將語音分解為最小的音素,並與字母或字形作對應,是拼讀與拼寫的核心。

VISUAL-SPATIAL SYSTEM

Function: Recognizes character forms, tracks text lines, and maintains proper writing orientation.
Difficulty: When affected, children may skip lines, misalign text, or confuse visually similar characters.
HKOMR enhances visual tracking and spatial organization to improve reading stability and character recognition.
功能:協助辨認字形結構、追蹤文字行列及保持正確的書寫方向。

MOTOR COORDINATION SYSTEM

Function: Coordinates fine motor and eye–hand movements for controlled handwriting and posture.
Difficulty: Weak motor control causes distorted strokes, unstable letters, or slow writing speed.

What does a reading and writing assessment include?

Our comprehensive assessment examines 5 systems, including phonological processing, visual spatial, motor coordination, sensory integration and cognitive executive function systems. The 90-minute session allows us to design a personalized treatment plan that matches each child’s needs.
我們的讀寫評估將檢視五大系統,包括語音處理、視覺空間、動作協調、感覺統合及認知執行功能系統。
整個評估約需 90 分鐘,讓我們能根據孩子的需要,制定最合適的個人化治療方案。

By what age can children join Write with Ease?
幾歲的孩子可以參加我們的讀寫訓練?
Our reading and writing program is suitable for children aged 5 and above, once basic language and attention skills are developed. For younger children who show early warning signs such as difficulty remembering sounds, recognizing letters, or organizing strokes, we recommend to strengthen foundational reflex and sensory systems before formal reading begins.
我們的訓練計劃「讀」適合五歲或以上的孩子,當他們已具備基本語言及專注力發展時即可參加。若年紀較小的孩子已出現早期徵兆,例如難以記住聲音、辨認字母或書寫筆劃混亂,我們建議先透過神經反射及感覺統合訓練為正式閱讀打好基礎。

How long does it take to see changes?
需要多久才會見到改善?
Every child is unique but improvements should be observed within weeks. Since dyslexia training at HKOMR works at the brain-based level, changes are designed to be lasting and support overall communication and learning.
每個孩子的情況都不同,不過大部分孩子均在數星期內已會作出改善。由於我們的讀寫訓練是以大腦為基礎,因此改善通常更持久,並有助於整體學習與溝通。
